The 2009 HR Derby: The epitome of boredom.

The Home Run Derby isn't even over, and as much as I am rooting for Ryan Howard, this year's derby is the most boring one I have yet to see.

For starters, ESPN is completely butchering the coverage. Chris Berman is a bore and a fake. They'd be better off sticking a bowl of pudding in front of a microphone and telling it to talk. I am so tired of his completely hack home run call, "back back back" Enough of that you bald headed fool. He even pulled out the line a few times when the ball already landed in the seats.

Maybe it would have been more interesting if he pulled some of this material out of his pocket:

And, brace yourself, Espn introduced a simply stunning piece of technology which tracks each ball hit with a looong yellow line which turns green when it is a home run. Finally! I thought this day would never come, now I get to see this every swing because I can just never tell when a ball really is a home run:

Espn even brought out this stunning piece of technology which lets people 3 miles away from the tv know when someone hit a home run by tracing the ball with a giant green line that can be viewed from google earth.

What a giant sack of crap.

And by the way, is it just me or should Prince Fielder not be able to play baseball with that body of his. I'm amazed he can move around the field without dropping of a heart attack. Of course he's gonna go win the derby now that I'm making fun of him.

princefielderdonuts.jpgOne other thing I found out while watching the derby. You can all thank me now by the way, I found where Osama Bin Laden has been hiding out all these years: in whatever that thing is on Ryan Franklin's chin:

RF.jpgIts not the best picture, but I noticed in the Cubs/Cardinals game yesterday that he actually combs that thing too. I'm ashamed I share a last name with him, I'm more proud of this Franklin:

0628franklin.gifThat just goes to show you how incredibly boring the derby is this year, I'm searching google for a picture of franklin the turtle while Ryan Howard is at bat.

It was so boring that the PA annoucner had to keep reminding the fans to cheer and get behind each hitter. I don't think I've ever seen that in a derby before. For this one day only, the MLB should bring out roided up Mark McGuire and Sammy Sosa and put on a show like the good ole' days.

GotJuice.jpgIn all seriousness, the derby stunk this year because there was no big story. Yeah, Albert Pujols is playing in his home turf, but he didn't exactly put on a show. Last year is exactly what the derby needed, Josh Hamilton going absolutely nuts in a stunning comeback from drugs, in the last season of Yankee Stadium. Amazing. This year, not so much.

00Josh.jpgEven other players seemed bored. Ryan Howard's pitching coach looked like it was a chore for him to be there and kept getting irritated when Howard wouldn't swing at a string of pitches in a row.

I was gonna wait for the derby to be over to add some things to this, but I can't do it anymore. Chris Berman's voice has put me to sleep entirely. If I hear "back back back" one more time I'm going to bite my own ears off.

Last night was a clunker for alot of reasons. No compelling story (aside from Pujols, who stunk). No monstrous numbers being put up. Only a few homers that were notable.

The announcers seemed like they could barely pay attention to what was going on. And Joe Morgan has to go. I don't know if he is trying to be funny or if he is actually that conceited and clueless, but jeez.

And drop the neon crayon shakey "halo" that follows the ball. It was annoying. Like a little kid trying to follow the ball across a telestrator.

I have to say, the Berman vid at first looked fake. Then as the video progressed, I was thinking "this is either a great fake or someone at ESPN really really does not like Berman!!

Either way, I've never been a fan of Berman and all this does is give me more ammo to not like him. As far as I'm concerned, he's right down there with the Whine Country Giants broadcast team.

It was indeed boring. There was a huge lack of excitement that was in last year's derby.

The Derby was just plain rough. Pujols didn't live up to expectations and Inge putting up that 0 was just devastating to the Derby's reputation. It really was a joke.

The other thing about Berman's HR call was that he'd go, "It's WAY back into the seats," even though the ball would be in, like, the third row. Just not good at all.

You could have had some excitement if A-Rod and Manny were invited. :::leaves so as to not get hit by something:::

Agree completely, the derby sucked and so does Berman!

Wish Adrian Gonzalez hadn't flopped. He was donating $200 for every HR to local charities.

Just wait until they bring the derby to Citi Field in 2013.....the first-round scores will be 0-0-0-1-0-2-0-1. The winner will win the final round with 2 and Brandon Inge would still finish with an 0-fer if he added the distance of each of his crappy squibbers together.

Hey thanks for commenting! Ugh I agree, the HR Derby was hoooooooorrrible! But did you at least enjoy the game last night? I'm sorry the NL lost but at least they put up a good fight :] xoxo http://diamondgirl55.mlblogs.com

I thought being there live would make it more interesting, but it didn't. After about an hour I was yawning (and p.o.'d that the lefties weren't' pulling the ball into my section in RF).

Have to tell ya, the AA HR Derby was more exctiting than the major league one. Watched some high school kids go deep...pretty impressive. And yeah, Berman makes me want to gag. Ugh.
